Hokkaido Landscape Art Museum is a living gallery dedicated to the ongoing work of painter Shuichi Okuda, who has spent over 30 years capturing the essence of this region. In Hokkaido’s extreme climate—where summer reaches 30°C and winter drops to -30°C—Okuda’s field-based approach brings a striking sense of presence to his paintings. Visitors often feel the wind, light, and atmosphere as if standing within the scene itself. The museum is housed in a nostalgic Western-style wooden building from 1950, which served as a filming location for Yoon Seok-ho’s Shochiku film A Breeze in the Heart. Its timeless charm leaves a lasting impression, drawing many visitors back again and again. Surrounding the museum is a 7,600-square-meter satoyama landscape, including the artist’s handmade atelier and garden spaces that often appear as motifs in his work. Guests are welcome to stroll through this tranquil setting, known as the artist’s garden. A small chapel on the grounds—Maria Chapel of Rainbow Light—offers a peaceful place for quiet reflection. We invite you to bring a packed lunch and enjoy a leisurely walk through this heartfelt space.
